Titus Glover Slams EOCO, Government Over Chairman Wontumi’s Arrest and Hospitalisation

Former Tema East MP and ex-Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, has strongly criticised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the current government for their handling of the arrest and subsequent hospitalisation of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

During an interview on Onua FM’s Yen Nsempa morning show with host Nana Yaa Brefo Danso, Titus Glover described Wontumi’s arrest and the secrecy surrounding his health crisis as “capricious and misleading,” accusing EOCO of operating in the shadows and withholding critical information from party officials and the public.

“Why the drama? Why the masks? Why the misleading conduct?” he asked, referencing reports that masked operatives were involved in Wontumi’s re-arrest shortly after he had appeared at the CID Headquarters.

He further alleged that EOCO had provided false information to the NPP’s legal team and leadership about Wontumi’s location after he reportedly collapsed during interrogation.

“As we speak, we don’t know where Chairman Wontumi is. EOCO gave us a location, but he is not there. We’ve been deceived,” he claimed, expressing frustration and concern over the lack of transparency.

Political Finger-Pointing: NDC Accused of Repeating NPP’s Past

Titus Glover didn’t hold back in his broader political commentary, accusing President John Mahama’s administration of perpetuating the same misuse of state institutions for political ends—an accusation that has previously been levelled at the NPP.

“This is exactly what the NPP was accused of doing. Now the NDC under Mahama is doing the same. Continue, President Mahama, continue,” he said sarcastically, suggesting the current government is also complicit in illegal mining activities (galamsey) while evading accountability.

Background to the Controversy

Chairman Wontumi was initially invited by the police for questioning on Monday, May 26. He returned the following day and was granted bail on Tuesday, May 27, after being cautioned over alleged involvement in illegal mining, environmental pollution, and trespassing into a protected forest reserve.

However, events took a dramatic turn shortly after his release. He was reportedly re-arrested by masked operatives and transferred to EOCO for further questioning regarding alleged financial dealings with EXIM Bank. During this second round of interrogation, Wontumi reportedly collapsed and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital, according to his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi.

As of Wednesday morning, his exact location remains unknown, intensifying concerns among NPP leadership and grassroots supporters alike.
