Sammi Awuku resigns as NLA Director-General

Sammi Awuku, the Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), has stepped down from his role effective Monday, January 13, 2024.

His resignation comes after his election as Member of Parliament (MP) for Akuapem North in the December 7, 2024, general elections.

In a formal letter to President John Mahama, Mr. Awuku expressed his desire to dedicate himself fully to his new role and serve the people of Akuapem North. He also requested the appointment of a successor to ensure a seamless transition and smooth handing over of responsibilities.

Appointed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in August 2021 and later confirmed by the Public Services Commission in July 2022, Mr. Awuku has been widely credited with transforming the fortunes of the NLA.

During his tenure, he repositioned the NLA from a struggling organization into a profitable and globally recognized entity. His strategic leadership not only raised the Authority’s profile on the international stage but also earned him significant accolades.

In March 2024, Mr. Awuku was elected Vice President of the African Lotteries Association (ALA), further cementing his influence in the industry. Domestically, he was celebrated for his exceptional performance, receiving the prestigious Overall Public Sector CEO of the Year Award twice at the Ghana CEO Summit and Excellence Awards.

In addition, in May 2024, he was honored as CEO of the Year in the lottery industry. Mr. Awuku attributed these accomplishments to the collective efforts and dedication of the NLA’s management and staff.

As he transitions to his new role as MP, Mr. Awuku leaves behind a legacy of remarkable achievements and a revitalized National Lottery Authority.
