Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Minister-designate for the Ashanti Region, has pledged to focus on revitalizing gold and cocoa production to drive economic growth in the region.

Speaking on Nhyira FM’s “Kuro Yi Mu Nsem” program, Dr. Amoakohene stressed the importance of these sectors, describing them as critical to the livelihoods of many in the Ashanti Region.

“Cocoa and gold production are key revenue sources for the people of Ashanti, especially for farmers. My goal is to collaborate with industry stakeholders to develop and enhance these areas,” he said.

Dr. Amoakohene expressed concern over the recent decline in cocoa output, which he attributed to challenges under the previous administration.

“Previously, cocoa production reached nearly 1 million tons annually, but now it’s down to around 500,000 tons, which is deeply troubling. We must work to reverse this trend,” he stated.

The minister-designate also addressed the ongoing issue of illegal mining, or “galamsey,” which has significantly impacted the region. He noted the need for a community-centered approach to tackle the problem effectively.

“During my campaign, I engaged with those involved in galamsey and realized many turn to it out of necessity, as they lack other job opportunities. Sending in security forces is only a temporary solution; as soon as they leave, people return to illegal mining. We need the community’s support to find lasting solutions,” he explained.

Dr. Amoakohene outlined plans to provide alternative livelihood training for those dependent on illegal mining.

“We need to equip them with skills in other economic ventures. If they have alternatives, they’ll be able to transition from galamsey to sustainable means of livelihood,” he said.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of supporting legal, responsible mining practices, advocating for the government to assist miners willing to follow regulations.

“There are hardworking miners who need proper licenses and training. By supporting them, we can promote safe mining practices and contribute to sustainable gold production,” he added.

Dr. Amoakohene’s vision includes streamlining the informal mining sector to integrate it into the formal economy while ensuring environmental sustainability and economic growth in the Ashanti Region.
