Thomas Tanko Musah, General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has voiced concerns over insufficient compensation and lack of adequate rest for teachers operating under the double-track school system.

His comments come after Minister of Education, Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum, recently cautioned against the swift termination of the double-track approach, warning of possible negative impacts on students’ academic progress. Dr. Adutwum’s remarks were aimed at the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has vowed to abolish the system if it wins the December 7 general elections.

Speaking with Citi News, Mr. Tanko Musah highlighted the strain the double-track system has placed on teachers, stressing the urgent need for rest periods. He called on the government to ensure fair compensation and supportive measures for educators in these roles, underscoring the connection between teacher welfare and educational quality.

“Leave is essential for workers—it provides a chance to rest, recharge, and effectively prepare for their responsibilities. Even labor laws recognize the necessity of compulsory leave. If machines need servicing, humans need rest, too,” he remarked.

He added, “Teachers in double-track schools are overworked and inadequately compensated. If the double-track system is to continue, then it’s critical that fair compensation plans be established. Expecting teachers to work relentlessly without proper support is unreasonable.”
