The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is set to deliver a ruling today, Thursday, October 17, on a petition calling for the removal of four Members of Parliament (MPs) from their seats.

The petition, driven by the Minority, seeks to oust Agona West MP Cynthia Morrison, Suhum MP Kojo Asante, Fomena MP Andrew Asiamah, and Amenfi Central MP Peter Kwakye Ackah.

The basis of the petition is that these MPs have filed to run as independent candidates in the upcoming December general elections, a move seen as conflicting with their positions within their respective political parties.

One of the MPs facing the potential removal, Peter Kwakye Ackah, expressed a calm outlook regarding the ruling. He explained, “I have not formally declared my departure from the party. I have merely indicated my intention to run as an independent candidate in the next parliamentary elections. Running as an independent candidate doesn’t automatically mean I am leaving the party.”

Ackah added, “If the Speaker decides my seat is vacant, I have no control over that. I understand that every decision has consequences, and I’m ready to face whatever comes my way.”

The ruling is anticipated to have significant implications for the affected MPs as they navigate the consequences of their decision to contest independently.
