The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced plans to reinstate road and bridge tolls as part of efforts to generate revenue for road maintenance and infrastructure projects.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Thursday, February 6, 2025, the Head of the Ministry’s Public Relations Unit, Nasir Ahmad Yartey, confirmed that preparations are underway to ensure a seamless reimplementation of the toll system.

According to Mr. Yartey, the tolls are expected to take effect in July 2025, with a full rollout anticipated by the end of the year, barring any unexpected challenges. He emphasized that the initiative is aimed at improving efficiency while addressing the financial constraints of road maintenance.

“We will introduce a modern, technology-driven toll collection system that eliminates human interaction. This will create a traffic-free process, prevent revenue leakages, and expand the tax net to cover at least 90% of road users,” he explained.

The Ministry is also in discussions with the Ministry of Finance to explore a public-private partnership (PPP) model for implementing the tolling system.

While details regarding the specific toll locations are yet to be finalized, Mr. Yartey indicated that these decisions would be guided by proposals from concessionaires involved in the project.

Ahead of the reintroduction, some stakeholders have proposed integrating toll payments into the renewal process for roadworthy certificates, ensuring a more streamlined and efficient collection method.
