Madam Akua Donkor, the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra. A family source confirmed her passing to MyJoyOnline.com on Tuesday, October 29, noting that she died on Monday, October 28, at the age of 83.

Akua Donkor was well-known in Ghanaian politics for her spirited personality and unwavering advocacy for farmers and women’s rights. Her fearless and outspoken nature helped her connect with the grassroots communities she aimed to uplift, making her a recognized figure across the nation.

Her political journey, marked by resilience and determination, included multiple presidential bids despite financial challenges. She first entered the political arena as the Assemblywoman for Herman in the Ashanti Region before running for president as an independent candidate in 2012. Though disqualified by the Electoral Commission due to eligibility issues, she did not contest the decision legally but instead endorsed Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

Akua Donkor faced further hurdles in 2016, when a fire destroyed the GFP headquarters in Kabu, Eastern Region, which led to her disqualification from that year’s election. Despite these challenges, she remained a dedicated advocate for marginalized communities, continuing her work with passion and resilience.

Ahead of the 2024 general elections, where she was listed as the third candidate on the ballot, Akua Donkor had been actively campaigning, just 39 days from election day. Her campaign promises included ambitious plans like free vehicles for journalists, duty-free port services for goods clearance, free education, and improved wages for farmers.

Since her passing, an outpouring of tributes has filled social media as supporters and well-wishers honor her legacy and convey their condolences to her family and the GFP. Akua Donkor’s impact on Ghanaian politics, particularly as a champion for underserved communities, leaves a lasting impression.
