Nigeria emerged victorious in the 2024 U-20 WAFU B Cup of Nations, defeating Ghana 2-1 in a thrilling final on Wednesday, October 30.
The Flying Eagles took control in the first half, showcasing strong attacking play that led to Kparobo Arierhi’s opener in the 33rd minute, as he slotted home with a clean finish. Just before halftime, Arierhi struck again, capitalizing on a loose ball in the box and sending it into the top left corner to put Nigeria up 2-0.
The Black Satellites, under coach Desmond Ofei, struggled to find their rhythm early on but returned with renewed energy after the break. They dominated possession and intensified their attack, with Hayford Adu Boahen creating opportunities in the final third, though the team initially struggled to convert.
In the 75th minute, Ghana found a breakthrough as Jerry Afriyie, who’s been a standout throughout the tournament, headed in his fifth goal, igniting hope for a comeback. Despite Ghana’s determined push in the final minutes, Nigeria’s defense held strong, securing the victory and the championship.
With their performances, both Ghana and Nigeria have earned spots in the upcoming U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, promising more action on the continental stage.
