NCCE dismisses media reports on extremists targeting the 2024 elections

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has denied claims made by the Ghanaian Times that it had issued statements regarding national security and the upcoming 2024 general elections. The newspaper had reported that extremists and jihadist groups were targeting the elections and that the NCCE had identified attempts to recruit young people to disrupt the polls.

In a statement released by the Commission, NCCE clarified that neither its Chairperson, Kathleen Addy, nor any other staff member had made such comments. The Commission firmly disassociated itself from the report, labeling it as false and misleading.

“The information provided is untrue. The public has been misinformed, and the NCCE does not support or endorse the claims made by the newspaper,” the statement read.

The NCCE has addressed both the reporter and the Ghanaian Times, calling for a correction to be issued in response to the misleading article. The Commission also urged the public, media, security agencies, and all relevant stakeholders to disregard the report.

“The NCCE has long worked to combat misinformation, and this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate information,” the statement added.

The Commission reiterated its dedication to promoting civic education, safeguarding public trust, and encouraging individuals to verify information before disseminating it.
