Government Allocates GH¢683 Million for Teacher and Nursing Trainee Allowances

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced a total allocation of GH¢683 million for trainee allowances in the 2025 budget. This includes GH¢203 million for teacher trainees and GH¢480 million for nursing trainees.

The announcement was made on March 11 during the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament. This development brings relief to trainees amid concerns about a possible cancellation of their allowances.

Earlier this year, in February 2025, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu revealed that the government would be suspending feeding allowances for teacher trainees in colleges of education. Speaking at a meeting with college principals in Accra, he stated that the policy was unsustainable and inconsistent with global higher education standards.

As a replacement, the government intends to introduce an enhanced student loan scheme, allowing trainees to manage their own expenses, including meals.
