The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has reiterated the government's unwavering commitment to eradicating illegal mining in Ghana, emphasizing a firm and determined approach to the fight.

Following a successful operation on February 22, 2025, to reclaim the Shelter Belt Forest Reserve, the minister praised the collaborative efforts of the Ministries of Defence and Interior in tackling the menace. Hon. Buah underscored the urgent need to restore degraded forest reserves, protect water bodies, and preserve biodiversity, all of which have been severely impacted by illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has disclosed that illegal mining has devastated approximately 30 hectares of the Shelter Belt Forest Reserve, contributing to a staggering 5,000 hectares lost nationwide due to galamsey activities.

Expressing deep concern over the environmental damage, Hon. Buah stressed that such destruction cannot persist. He affirmed that President John Dramani Mahama fully supports efforts to clear illegal miners from forests and water bodies.

As part of a recent operation, authorities seized 15 excavators, which will be repurposed for road construction—an innovative approach to turning confiscated equipment into tools for national development.

The minister further assured that investigations are ongoing to track down those responsible, with the Ghana Armed Forces and Police Service actively working to bring perpetrators to justice.

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has urged Ghanaians to unite in the fight against illegal mining, emphasizing the need for collective action to safeguard the environment, public health, and the nation’s future.

He also strongly condemned the recent attack on Citi FM journalists, calling for an end to such acts and stressing the importance of press freedom in national development.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, praised Hon. Buah for his hands-on approach in tackling illegal mining. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating galamsey, vowing that the fight to protect Ghana’s natural resources will be won.
