The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has confirmed the tragic passing of Nigerian professional boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who collapsed and died during a fight at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on Saturday night, March 29, 2025.

In an official statement, the GBA clarified that Oluwasegun had been medically cleared to compete before stepping into the ring against Ghanaian opponent John Mbanugu.

"Oluwasegun was declared medically fit by the Nigeria Boxing Board Control, holding a valid certification as a professional boxer. The GBA subsequently sanctioned and approved the international contest," the statement read.

The authority provided details of the fateful bout, noting that Oluwasegun had been dominant from the beginning. However, in the third round, at 2 minutes and 46 seconds, an unexpected turn of events led to his collapse.

"Shortly before the round ended, Oluwasegun took a step back and leaned against the ropes without sustaining any punch from his opponent. Sensing something was wrong, referee Richard Amevi promptly stopped the fight and called for immediate medical assistance," the statement explained.

Ringside physicians and paramedics from the national ambulance service swiftly intervened in an attempt to revive him, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Following the incident, GBA President Abraham Kotei Neequaye promptly notified the Secretary of the Nigerian Boxing Board Control. He also reported the matter to the Korle Bu Police Station and facilitated the transfer of Oluwasegun’s body to the main mortuary for preservation.

Additionally, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, was formally briefed on the incident.

Oluwasegun, a seasoned boxer, had a professional record of 24 fights, securing 13 victories, suffering eight losses, and drawing three times. His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the boxing community, sparking conversations on athlete safety in the sport.
