The Director of Legal Affairs at the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC), Rev. Victor Brew, has defended the delay in releasing the 2024 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, attributing it to ongoing investigations into suspected exam malpractices.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Rev. Brew assured the public that such delays are not unprecedented, as WAEC has encountered similar situations in previous years.

“This is not the first time results have been withheld due to investigations. It has happened before, and it is in line with our standard procedures,” he stated.

He explained that WAEC operates under strict guidelines, which all candidates are aware of before sitting for the exams.

“The rules are clear, and when they are broken, consequences follow. Both candidates and stakeholders are well informed about these regulations,” he added.

His remarks come in response to the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), which has issued a one-week ultimatum to WAEC to release all withheld results or face nationwide protests.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, NUGS President Daniel Korley Botchway warned that the union would not hesitate to take action if WAEC failed to comply.

Rev. Brew, however, reassured students and parents that the process is being handled according to WAEC’s established protocols.

“We are not doing anything out of the ordinary. A significant portion of the results has already been processed, and the majority of malpractice cases have been addressed,” he said.

He further acknowledged the frustrations of affected students but emphasized that WAEC’s priority is to ensure fairness and maintain the integrity of the examination process.

“We understand the concerns, but we must uphold fairness. It is unfair for groups like NUGS to suggest otherwise,” he stressed.

Providing a timeline for the release of the outstanding results, Rev. Brew disclosed that investigations would be concluded by February 28, 2025.

“We expect to finalize all investigations by February 28. The remaining results, which are relatively few, will then be released. Out of 120 schools under scrutiny, 60 are still being assessed, and we will ensure a fair resolution before making the results public,” he assured.
