Dr. Sodzi Sodzi-Tettey Appointed Acting CEO of National Vaccine Institute

President John Mahama has appointed Dr. Sodzi Sodzi-Tettey as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Vaccine Institute (NVI), pending approval by the Board and the Public Services Commission.

The NVI, established in May 2023, is responsible for developing institutional frameworks for vaccine research, production, and manufacturing in Ghana.

Role and Responsibilities

As Acting CEO, Dr. Sodzi-Tettey will lead efforts to:

  • Secure funding and mobilize resources to support the Institute’s objectives.
  • Build partnerships with both local and international stakeholders.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with vaccine manufacturing standards.
  • Oversee technology transfer agreements between vaccine developers and the pharmaceutical industry.

About Dr. Sodzi Sodzi-Tettey

Dr. Sodzi-Tettey is a seasoned Public Health Physician with 21 years of experience spanning district medical practice, national health leadership, and global health programs. He has spearheaded quality improvement initiatives in over 200 public hospitals across Ghana, significantly reducing child mortality rates.

Before his appointment, he served as Vice President of Global Delivery at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in Boston, USA, where he provided strategic leadership for IHI’s projects across Africa and the Middle East.

Expressing his gratitude for the appointment, Dr. Sodzi-Tettey stated,
"This is an incredible opportunity to strengthen our health system through local vaccine production. I am deeply honored by the trust placed in me by President Mahama and Health Minister Hon. Akandoh. I look forward to fostering key partnerships at local, regional, and global levels to drive the success of this national initiative."

Education and Achievements

Dr. Sodzi-Tettey is an alumnus of Achimota School and holds a medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School. He later pursued a Master of Public Health (MPH) at the University of Ghana School of Public Health, graduating as the best student and receiving the prestigious Prof. & Mrs. Ofosu-Amaah prizes.

Additionally, he completed the Program for Leadership Development at Harvard Business School, an equivalent of an Executive MBA.

His professional affiliations include:

  • Rockefeller Global Fellow for Social Innovation
  • Fellow & Board Director of the International Society for Quality in Healthcare (Ireland)
  • Former Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association

With his wealth of experience in healthcare leadership and innovation, Dr. Sodzi-Tettey is poised to steer the National Vaccine Institute towards achieving its mission of advancing vaccine research and local manufacturing in Ghana.
