Minority in Parliament Demands Increase in Cocoa Producer Price

The Minority NPP Caucus in Parliament has urged the government to raise the producer price of cocoa, referencing commitments made before and after the 2024 elections.

According to the Minority, prominent NDC officials, including Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku and Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, had previously criticized the former administration for underpaying cocoa farmers.

They argue that with the global price of cocoa soaring to $10,000 per ton, farmers should receive at least two-thirds of this amount, as promised during the election campaign.

Dr. Isaac Yaw Opoku, MP for Offinso South, led the call, insisting that the government must act immediately to fulfill its pledge and pay cocoa farmers 70% of the international price.

The Minority warns that frustration is mounting in cocoa-growing communities and urges swift intervention to prevent unrest and ensure the continued growth of Ghana’s cocoa sector.
