The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has dismissed 38 Level 100 students for failing to meet the institution’s academic requirements. The decision, officially announced in a statement on March 7, 2025, followed a thorough review of their academic records from the first and second semesters.

Academic Standards and CGPA Requirement

According to the university’s statement, the affected students were withdrawn due to either failing to attain the minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 1.0 or exceeding the allowable number of failed courses, even after resit opportunities.

A letter confirming their withdrawal was signed by Dr. Mohammed Adam, Acting Head of the Department of Social Studies Education. It emphasized that the students were no longer eligible to attend Level 200 lectures or sit for examinations in Level 200 courses.

UEW assured that counselling sessions were offered to the students before their dismissal. The university reaffirmed that the action aligns with the guidelines in its Revised Undergraduate Students’ Handbook.

Breakdown of Expulsions

Out of the 38 students removed from the institution, 32 failed to meet the CGPA threshold, while six were withdrawn for failing more than three courses. The university has directed all relevant departments to update their records accordingly.

Reactions and Policy Review Calls

The mass expulsion has triggered significant reactions on social media, with some users expressing concern about its impact on the affected students. Many have called for a reassessment of academic policies to provide better support systems for struggling learners.

However, the university maintains that upholding academic standards is crucial to preserving the integrity of its programs.

UEW’s Commitment to Academic Excellence

"This decision reflects our dedication to maintaining high academic standards and ensuring that all students meet the necessary requirements for progression," the university stated.

As a public institution committed to excellence, UEW encourages students to strictly adhere to academic regulations and seek assistance whenever they face challenges to avoid similar consequences.
