The presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, has come to the defence of Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, asserting that she is impartial and committed to upholding the laws of the electoral process.

Speaking in an interview, Akua Donkor emphasized that Mrs. Mensa does not act out of personal interest or animosity towards any individual or political party. Instead, she is guided by the principles of electoral law.

“Jean Mensa doesn’t hate anyone, but you must follow the rules to avoid issues with her,” Donkor said during an interview with Accra-based Kasapa FM. She added, “The EC is like Ghana’s God because it is the body that determines who qualifies to contest in elections.”

Akua Donkor urged political parties to comply with the rules and procedures laid out by the Electoral Commission, expressing her belief that Mrs. Mensa’s leadership is divinely appointed. “God gave us Jean Mensa, so if the Electoral Commission asks me to do something, that is exactly what I will do. Anyone who speaks ill of her will not be forgiven by God.”

Her remarks came after the disqualification of 11 presidential candidates ahead of the 2024 general election. The EC disqualified these candidates following a thorough review of their nomination forms to ensure they met the necessary legal requirements.

Although the EC has promised to refund the filing fees of the disqualified candidates, some of them have already initiated legal action against the Commission, while others have threatened to do the same.
