A political storm is brewing in the Nanton Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the suspension of 34 party members. The move has sparked outrage among party supporters, leading to a dramatic protest by the Coalition of NPP Youth Groups, who locked up the party office in defiance.

The suspended individuals, comprising polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, and constituency executives, were accused of misconduct during the 2024 general elections. Party leadership claims they aided the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate by distributing items to voters and obstructing the electoral process through roadblocks.

However, the Coalition of NPP Youth Groups strongly opposes the suspensions, describing them as unfair and detrimental to party unity. Their convener, Ibrahim Abdul Fatawu, argues that instead of sidelining members, the party should focus on reconciliation and strategic planning to regain power in 2028. He also insists that the affected members were denied a fair hearing, which contradicts the principles of democracy.

The youth group has petitioned the NPP’s Regional and National leadership to intervene and reverse the suspensions. They warn that upholding such punitive measures could demoralize party loyalists, discouraging them from actively contributing to the party’s progress.

Calling for a more inclusive approach, the coalition urges leadership to prioritize unity and ensure a stronger, more cohesive NPP in Nanton.
