Teacher Trainees Demand Education Minister’s Removal Over Allowance Cut

Some teacher trainees are calling for the dismissal of the education minister following the government’s decision to replace their allowances with a student loan scheme.

In an interview with Adom News, trainees at Berekum College of Education voiced their opposition, arguing that the new policy would impose a heavy financial burden on them even before they begin their teaching careers.

Many fear that relying on loans could expose them to unfair deductions from financial institutions, making repayment difficult in the long run.

“We prefer the little allowance to taking a loan,” one trainee stated, explaining that although the stipend is small, it provides essential financial support.

However, not all trainees oppose the decision. Some believe that scrapping the allowance system is necessary, arguing that it creates an unfair advantage over university students who do not receive such benefits.

Those in favor of the change are urging the government to ensure that the loan scheme offers sufficient financial support, as the previous allowance was already inadequate to meet their needs.
