Accra, April 29, 2025 – In a powerful show of commitment to healthcare equity, President John Dramani Mahama has pledged six months of his salary to the newly launched Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly branded Mahama Cares. The donation, amounting to GHC330,939.00, was made public shortly after the official launch of the fund at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra.

The announcement was shared by Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who posted on Facebook: “President Mahama donates six months of his salary to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares).”

Based on the 2020 report on Article 71 Office Holders’ emoluments by Prof. Yaa Ntiamoah Baidu, the President’s monthly salary stands at GHC47,277.00. Multiplied by six, this brings the total donation to over GHC330,000.

The Mahama Cares initiative is designed to offer financial relief to Ghanaians battling chronic conditions such as kidney failure, cancer, and heart disease. These illnesses continue to place significant stress on individuals and the national healthcare infrastructure.

At the launch, President Mahama appealed to businesses across Ghana to align their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities with the fund’s mission.

“This fund will benefit your staff, your customers, your fellow Ghanaians,” the President stated. “I want to encourage corporate Ghana—banks, mining companies, retailers, and all other businesses—to dedicate part of their CSR budgets annually to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. Your contribution will have a lasting impact.”

He emphasized that the fund is a direct way for businesses to give back to the very people who support their operations.

Mahama Cares is expected to be a game-changing initiative in Ghana’s healthcare system, mobilizing both public and private resources to assist vulnerable citizens in need of life-saving treatment.
