The Media Coalition Against Galamsey has announced plans to stage a “red band” protest in solidarity with Organised Labour’s indefinite strike, which is set to commence on October 10, 2024. Kenneth Ashigbey, the Convener of the Coalition, disclosed this during an interview with Citi FM on Wednesday, October 9.

The protest aims to pressure the government to take firmer action against illegal mining (galamsey), highlighting the government’s failure to heed repeated calls for a ban on the destructive practice.

Participants in the protest are encouraged to wear red bands on their arms or heads and tie red bands to vehicles like cars, motorbikes, and bicycles to show their support. Additionally, the Coalition urges the public to share images and videos of their participation on social media platforms, using the hashtags #StopGalamseyNow, #SaveOurLand, and #SaveOurFuture.

In a public statement, the Coalition called on Ghanaians to sustain the protest indefinitely, demanding concrete government action to end illegal mining and protect the country’s environment and future.
