Former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has called for transformative change in Ghana, urging voters to choose his leadership and party in the upcoming December 7 elections.

Delivering his closing campaign address at Zurak Park in Madina on Thursday evening, Mr. Mahama emphasized the urgency of resetting Ghana’s economic trajectory.

“The time to reset our country is now,” he declared. “Saturday’s election is not just another election—it is a pivotal moment for Ghana. It is a choice between the challenges of today and the opportunities of tomorrow—a Ghana that offers prosperity, opportunity, and justice for all.”

He outlined his vision for a nation where young people have access to decent, sustainable, and well-paying jobs. Public sector workers, he said, deserve stability, merit-based recognition, and improved working conditions, while entrepreneurs should operate in a fair market environment that fosters innovation and growth.

Mr. Mahama pledged to empower women and girls, ensuring equality, safety, and opportunities for them to reach their full potential.

“Leadership should prioritize the people, fight corruption, and build a Ghana we can all be proud of,” he stated, promising to establish a stable, safe, and vibrant 24-hour economy that will create millions of jobs.

Economic Reforms and Anti-Corruption Measures

Mr. Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to running a lean government with no more than 60 ministers and deputies, reducing political overheads, and eliminating wasteful spending. He also vowed to combat corruption rigorously and recover stolen public funds for national development.

“This is a fight to restore integrity and fairness—values that have been missing under the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government,” he said.

Women’s Empowerment

Highlighting his plans for gender equality, Mr. Mahama announced the creation of a Women’s Development Bank, a specialized institution managed by women to support women-owned businesses.

“This initiative will provide low-interest loans and tailored financial services, economically empowering at least one million Ghanaian women,” he added.

With his running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, poised to become Vice President, Mr. Mahama pledged to bring greater focus to women’s issues under the next NDC administration.

24-Hour Economy Policy

Touching on his 24-hour economic policy, the NDC leader described it as a game-changer for Ghana’s development.

“This policy will encourage businesses and public institutions to operate 24/7 in three eight-hour shifts, boosting productivity, driving economic growth, and creating well-paying jobs,” he said.

The initiative is aimed at transforming Ghana into an export-led, import-substitution economy, fostering industrialization and reducing dependence on imports.

As the campaign concludes, Mr. Mahama’s message centers on rebuilding Ghana’s economy, fighting corruption, and creating a society where fairness and opportunity prevail. He called on Ghanaians to seize the moment and vote for the NDC to secure a brighter future for the nation.
