Preparations underway to resume construction of National Cathedral – Board

The Chairman of the National Cathedral project, Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, has announced that construction is set to resume following a significant development. This decision came after a meeting held on September 20 between the Board of Directors of the National Cathedral of Ghana and auditors from Deloitte.

The meeting aimed to present church leaders with the findings of a statutory audit report conducted by Deloitte Ghana, which reviewed the project’s financial activities from its inception through December 31, 2020. The audit was initiated by the board in response to widespread public concerns over allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement surrounding the project.

Apostle Onyinah confirmed that with the completion of the audit, the project is now ready to move forward. “This audit was a crucial demand from both church leaders and the public to ensure transparency and accountability. With the report now complete, we are ready to resume construction. We are thankful for the support so far and hope that this milestone will inspire continued prayers and financial contributions towards the National Cathedral.”

Since the project began, Ghanaian taxpayers have spent $58 million, but as of August 2024, the structure remains unfinished. It is estimated that an additional $450 million is needed to complete the cathedral, though it is unclear if the necessary funds will be secured.

By mid-2022, contributions from various church denominations totaled GH¢2.21 million (around $164,000), a figure that falls well short of the remaining financial requirements. Despite the funding challenges, the project’s leaders remain hopeful that the support will grow as construction resumes.
