Ghanaian musician, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, alias Guru, has emerged winner in the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election.
Guru and his running mate, Jeffrey Adu-Yeboah secured 9,455 votes out of the total cast votes of 18,659 which gave them 50 percent votes. from 5.3% in the election that was held on Wednesday to 7%.
His close contender, Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah with a running mate, Lawrence Edinam Egleh garnered 6, 645 votes, which was 35%. This was a fraction of the total votes cast representing 6% of the total votes cast.
Earlier in the week the University Electoral Commission had disqualified the musician from the race for being a non resident student.
In the case, the Commission relied on Article 30 under which the candidate has to be a campus resident, among other things, and have to meet the requirements for the contestation of a JCR position in the hall.
The disqualification was however returned by the Appeals Board after a petition thus allowing him to or contest.
Thanks to the Guru-led administration, the affairs of the SRC for the 2024/25 academic year will be run.
