The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has instructed all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region to repair and maintain streetlights within their respective jurisdictions.

She has given the assemblies a 50-day deadline, starting from March 3, 2025, to ensure that faulty streetlights are fixed to improve nighttime visibility and security in the capital.

According to the minister, her office has engaged the Ministries of Energy and Roads and Highways, both of which have responded positively and pledged their support to complete the task within the given timeframe.

“The provision and maintenance of streetlights are essential for urban development and public safety. I assured the people of this region that within my first 50 days in office, major highways would be well-lit,” Ms. Ocloo stated.

She issued the directive during a working visit to the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly on Wednesday, February 19, where she familiarized herself with the assembly’s operations.

Ms. Ocloo commended assemblies that have already implemented structured maintenance plans to enhance safety and visibility in their communities.

“Despite challenges like cable theft, we remain committed to achieving our target within the 50-day period,” she assured.

To ensure compliance, the minister announced that she would personally visit all 29 MMDAs in the region to assess their progress.

Beyond street lighting, Ms. Ocloo, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Shai Osudoku, highlighted sanitation, waste management, public safety, and local governance strengthening as key focus areas.

She praised the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly for its sanitation efforts and urged them to actively participate in the Regional Sanitation Day scheduled for February 28, 2025.

“We must reinforce waste management strategies, encourage community involvement, and enforce sanitation laws to maintain a clean environment,” she emphasized.

Additionally, she revealed that a monitoring team had been established at the Regional Coordinating Council to evaluate and recognize the cleanest assembly.

Korle Klottey’s Municipal Coordinating Director, Emmanuel Baisie, reaffirmed the assembly’s commitment to collaborating with the minister to enhance service delivery and improve residents’ quality of life.
