The government has committed to taking swift action to prevent a looming food crisis within the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) following an outstanding GH₵275 million debt owed to food suppliers since August 2023.

President John Mahama gave this assurance during a meeting with the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General William Agyapong, and other Service Chiefs at the Jubilee House on Friday.

He revealed that the Ministries of Finance and Defence are actively working to clear the accumulated debt while putting measures in place to ensure timely payments in the future.

“This year, we have allocated over GH₵6.7 billion to the Ministry of Defence and the Ghana Armed Forces. As we continue to rebuild the economy, you can be assured that your budgetary support will increase to secure new platforms and assets that will enhance your operations,” Mahama stated.

Addressing the broader financial difficulties faced by the military, the President acknowledged a debt of approximately GH₵3.7 billion. However, he expressed confidence that, through strategic reforms and commitment, the Ghana Armed Forces would see significant modernization and expansion.

“We are already taking steps to resolve the food supply challenges affecting the Armed Forces by settling the GH₵275 million owed to food suppliers over the past 17 months,” he affirmed.

Mahama also underscored the important role of the Defence Industries Holding Company Limited in Ghana’s agricultural sector, emphasizing that the GAF’s disciplined personnel and vast land resources could contribute significantly to national food security.

He encouraged the military to explore innovative financing mechanisms to enhance infrastructure, training programs, and accommodation for service members.

“I will stand with you every step of the way. Plans are in motion to transform the Asutsuare Training Camp into a world-class training facility,” he assured.

The President further urged the Armed Forces to intensify efforts in combating illegal mining and maintaining peace in conflict-prone areas such as Bawku.

“Our troops are actively engaged in internal security operations to address ethnic and chieftaincy disputes. While we work through mediation, judicial processes, and community conflict resolution strategies, the military must continue to uphold peace and stability. I have full confidence in your ability to deliver,” he stated.

Mahama concluded by reaffirming his trust in the leadership of the Armed Forces, wishing the new Chief of Defence Staff and the Service Chiefs success in their mission to protect and defend the nation.

“I am confident that you will work with unity, resilience, and dedication to ensure that our military remains a pillar of strength and pride for Ghana,” he said.
