Cocoa farmers across Ghana are calling on President John Mahama to appoint a seasoned industry professional as the next Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).

As the backbone of the nation’s economy, the cocoa sector has faced significant challenges in recent years. Farmers believe that only a leader with extensive knowledge of the industry and strong connections to cocoa-growing communities can address these pressing issues effectively.

Farmers have highlighted the need for a CEO who understands their struggles, including low producer prices, inadequate access to fertilizers, poor road networks, and the limited availability of essential farming inputs.

Chief Farmer Fredrick Gbodzi Subriso emphasized the importance of empathy and expertise in tackling these challenges. “The cocoa sector needs a leader who not only understands the complexities of the industry but also prioritizes the needs of farmers,” he stated.

Nana Akwasi Awuah, the Krotihene of Nsawakrom, echoed this sentiment, stressing that an appointee with no ties to the cocoa industry could hinder progress. He called for a CEO who will advocate for farmers and remain deeply engaged with the sector.

Martha Addai, Ghana’s National Best Woman Cocoa Farmer of 2016, underscored the importance of strong leadership for the industry’s future. She explained that having a CEO who actively engages with farmers could also inspire the next generation to pursue careers in cocoa farming.

One name being floated by farmers is Bennett Akantoa, the former Managing Director of Cocoa Marketing Company GH Limited under President Mahama’s first administration. Akantoa’s vast experience in the cocoa sector has positioned him as a preferred candidate to lead COCOBOD and address the challenges plaguing the industry.

“The cocoa industry needs a leader who can navigate its complexities and strengthen ties with farmers. Bennett Akantoa’s track record makes him a strong choice to drive meaningful change,” the farmers stated in their appeal.

As the sector faces mounting uncertainty, farmers continue to push for leadership that prioritizes their needs and can chart a sustainable path forward for Ghana’s cocoa industry.
