The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has refuted claims that the government is planning to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

Speaking at Jubilee House on Friday, March 7, after President John Dramani Mahama’s second cabinet meeting, Mr. Jinapor clarified that no decision has been made to privatize these state-owned electricity distributors.

“The government has not taken any steps to sell ECG or NEDCo,” he stated. “Rather, we are considering partnerships to enhance revenue collection, which remains a significant challenge in the sector.”

He assured Ghanaians that the proposed strategy is aimed at improving financial efficiency while ensuring that both ECG and NEDCo remain under state ownership.

Mr. Jinapor further highlighted the crucial role these companies play in Ghana’s energy sector, stressing that any decision regarding their operations would be made in the national interest.

“We understand the concerns, but let me assure everyone that ECG and NEDCo will continue to be public assets. Our goal is to enhance their efficiency, not privatize them,” he reiterated.

The Minister urged the public to ignore false reports suggesting a planned sale of the power distributors. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s energy sector and ensuring stable and affordable electricity supply for all citizens.
