Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has revealed that the country’s two primary seaports — Tema and Takoradi — will begin operating around the clock starting July 1, 2025. The move comes as part of the government’s ambitious 24-hour economy agenda designed to stimulate growth and improve efficiency across vital economic sectors.

Speaking at the 2025 Ghana Horticulture Expo, President Mahama described the initiative as a transformative policy intended to enhance national productivity, promote exports, and streamline logistics operations.

“We are implementing a transformative 24-hour economy strategy to unlock Ghana’s full productive capacity,” Mahama said. “I am pleased to announce that from July 1, this initiative will officially take effect.”

As a cornerstone of the plan, Tema and Takoradi ports will shift to 24/7 operations, a change expected to ease port congestion, speed up cargo processing, and attract both local and international investment. The ports' nonstop functioning is projected to significantly benefit export-oriented industries such as horticulture, mining, and manufacturing.

“The 24-hour port operations will create a strong foundation for continuous production, efficient processing, and seamless logistics, particularly in the horticultural sector,” the President noted.

President Mahama further stated that the Ministry of Trade and Ministry of Transport are collaborating with key agencies including the Ghana Revenue Authority, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the Ghana Shippers’ Council to implement the round-the-clock schedule.

This policy marks a significant step in the Mahama administration’s broader efforts to reinvigorate the economy through reforms aimed at positioning Ghana as a competitive player in both regional and global trade. Industry stakeholders have consistently called for extended port hours to reduce delays, cut costs, and enhance the movement of goods.

With the 24-hour port operations set to begin soon, the government hopes to lay the groundwork for a modernized logistics ecosystem that supports accelerated economic growth.
