Presidential candidates for Ghana’s 2024 General Election have pledged to maintain peace before, during, and after the December 7 polls by signing a Peace Pact on Thursday.

The initiative, spearheaded by the National Peace Council and the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), aims to ensure a peaceful electoral process. This year’s Peace Pact is the fourth of its kind and was signed during a ceremony at the Kempinski Gold Coast City Hotel in Accra.

Eight of the 12 presidential candidates attended the event in person, while the remaining four were represented.

The key flagbearers present included Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), leaders of the two dominant political parties.

Other candidates who signed the pact included:

  • George Twum-Barima-Adu (Independent)
  • Hassan Ayariga (All People’s Congress)
  • Kofi Koranteng (Independent)
  • Nana Akosua Frimpomaa (Convention People’s Party)
  • Kofi Akpaloo (Liberal Party of Ghana)
  • Dr. Daniel Augustus Lartey Jnr (Great Consolidated Popular Party)

Alan Kyerematen of the Movement for Change was represented by Nana Ohene Ntow, while Christian Kwabena Andrews of the Ghana Union Movement was represented by his vice-presidential candidate, Evelyn Serwa Bonsu. Nana Kwame Bediako of The New Force sent his aide to represent him.

The Peace Pact reflects a collective commitment to uphold Ghana’s democratic values and ensure national harmony. It emphasizes the importance of peaceful campaigns and constructive dialogue, reinforcing Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.

This initiative sets the tone for a credible and harmonious election season, with all stakeholders committing to maintaining stability and unity.
