Dr. Randy Abbey, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Ghana COCOBOD, has committed to addressing the critical issues hindering the country’s cocoa industry.

During a meeting with a farmers’ group in Accra after taking office, Dr. Abbey acknowledged the numerous challenges the sector faces, including pricing concerns, illegal mining (galamsey), the poor welfare of farmers, climate change, declining cocoa production, and cocoa smuggling. He emphasized his dedication to working alongside the farmers to tackle these issues and revitalize the industry.

“I am aware of the struggles within the cocoa sector, and I’ve read about the issues affecting you, such as low cocoa prices, galamsey activities, and the declining welfare of farmers. Together, we will address these challenges and reinvigorate the industry,” Dr. Abbey assured the farmers.

He emphasized the central role farmers play in cocoa production and assured them that consultations would be a key part of his approach to policy development, ensuring that their voices are heard.

“My doors will always be open to listen to your suggestions and ideas. The farmers of Ghana are the backbone of our cocoa industry, and it is vital that you are at the heart of all improvements,” Dr. Abbey stated.

Nana Alhassan Bukari, representing the Cocoa Coffee Sheanut Farmers Association, highlighted that the drop in cocoa production is linked to poor farmer welfare, the impact of galamsey, and changing climate conditions. He expressed confidence in Dr. Abbey’s ability to bring about change.

“After hearing your speech, it feels like we’ve been in the same conversation already. The issues you mentioned are exactly what we’ve been facing, and we are hopeful that you will deliver on your promises,” said Mr. Bukari.

The farmers also noted that this meeting with Dr. Abbey marks a positive step forward, and they pledged their full support to him in his efforts to revitalize the sector.
