Cyber Security Authority Warns of Surge in Online Fraud, GH₵4.4 Million Lost in First Quarter of 2025

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has sounded the alarm over a sharp rise in cyber fraud, with financial losses reaching GH₵4.4 million between January and March 2025. This represents a significant jump from the GH₵2.4 million recorded during the same period last year.

According to the CSA, 350 cases of cyber fraud have been reported so far this year, with scammers increasingly exploiting digital platforms to defraud unsuspecting individuals.

Cybercriminals Targeting Festive Seasons

As Eid celebrations continue and Easter approaches, the CSA has cautioned the public to remain alert, as cybercriminals often capitalize on festive seasons when online transactions increase.

The Authority highlighted three common fraud tactics used by scammers:

  • Fake Online Shops: Fraudsters set up counterfeit e-commerce sites or pose as legitimate businesses on social media, offering attractive discounts. Victims make payments but never receive their items.

  • Brand Impersonation: Scammers manipulate search engine results to display fake business listings, deceiving customers into making payments to fraudulent accounts before being blocked.

  • Phishing Scams: Cybercriminals send deceptive emails and messages pretending to be businesses, romantic partners, or service providers, tricking victims into clicking malicious links that steal personal data or install malware.

Public Advised to Stay Cautious

To avoid falling victim to online scams, the CSA has urged consumers to take precautionary steps, including:

Verifying Online Retailers: Use reputable e-commerce platforms and check customer reviews before making purchases.

Avoiding Advance Payments: Only pay after receiving and inspecting goods. When using mobile money, ensure transactions are made to official business accounts.

Being Wary of Unrealistic Deals: If an offer seems too good to be true, it could be a scam.

Protecting Personal Information: Avoid sharing sensitive details like Ghana Card numbers, bank account information, or credit card details with unknown sources.

The CSA has also encouraged the public to report suspected cyber fraud incidents through its 24-hour helpline: Call or Text – 292, WhatsApp – 0501603111, or Email – report@csa.gov.gh.

Issued on March 28, 2025, the public alert emphasizes the growing cybercrime threat in Ghana and reinforces the need for heightened awareness, especially during festive seasons.
