Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi, popularly known as Roman Fada and the running mate for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has shared details about the passing of their 2024 Presidential Candidate, Akua Donkor. Akua Donkor died at Ridge Hospital in Accra on Monday, October 28, 2024, at the age of 72.

Roman Fada, in an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM, recounted the events leading up to her passing. He noted that they last spoke on Saturday morning in a conversation that lasted over two hours. Later that evening, he was informed by her driver that Akua Donkor wasn’t feeling well and was taken to the Nsawam Government Hospital. By nightfall, he received another update that she had returned home. Then, on Monday morning, he received a call from an ambulance driver informing him they were en route to Ridge Hospital with Akua Donkor. Roman Fada visited her that afternoon but received the heartbreaking news of her passing later that evening at 10 p.m.

Akua Donkor’s political journey was marked by her fierce advocacy for farmers and women’s rights, along with her bold and charismatic presence that resonated with grassroots supporters. She initially entered the political arena as the Assemblywoman for Herman in the Ashanti Region and launched her first presidential bid as an independent candidate in 2012. Although disqualified by the Electoral Commission for not meeting eligibility requirements, she remained undeterred, opting not to contest the decision in court but instead showing her support for Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

In 2016, she faced further challenges when a fire destroyed the GFP’s headquarters in Kabu, Eastern Region, complicating her campaign efforts and leading to her disqualification from that year’s elections. Despite these setbacks, Akua Donkor’s resilience never wavered as she continued to champion the causes of marginalized communities.

For the upcoming 2024 elections, she was listed as the third candidate on the presidential ballot and was actively campaigning with promises that included free vehicles for journalists, duty-free port services, free education, and better pay for farmers. Roman Fada, who serves as her running mate, is known as the manager of highlife musician Daddy Lumba and works as a broadcaster at Atinka FM. Akua Donkor’s legacy remains that of a tenacious advocate for the less privileged, leaving an indelible mark on Ghanaian politics.
