Former Ghanaian international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has issued an apology to Ghanaians for previously advocating for Otto Addo’s reappointment as Black Stars head coach.

The 33-year-old had been vocal in supporting Addo’s return following the dismissal of Chris Hughton, believing that Addo could lead the national team effectively. However, seven months into Addo’s second tenure, the team has struggled, placing Ghana in a precarious position in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Ghana currently sits in third place in their qualifying group, with only two points from four games, trailing Angola and Sudan. The Black Stars’ recent 2-0 defeat to Sudan has left them in danger of missing out on AFCON 2025.

Reflecting on the team’s struggles, Agyemang-Badu expressed regret for backing Addo’s return. “I apologise to Ghanaians. I was one of those who strongly supported coach Otto Addo’s second stint,” he said during an interview with Onua TV. “If you look at my previous interviews, I gave him a lot of support, but I’m sorry. It seems the task has proven too difficult for him.”

Since his reappointment in March, Addo has managed only two victories, alongside three losses and three draws. With two crucial qualifying matches in November, the Black Stars need to win both and hope for Sudan to slip up in order to keep their AFCON 2025 hopes alive.
