President-elect John Mahama has pledged to investigate the deaths of individuals during the recently concluded elections if the current administration fails to act.

The United States government has also raised concerns about the fatalities, which reportedly claimed four lives, and called for a thorough inquiry. In a statement issued on December 10, 2024, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged Ghanaian authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation.

Addressing a delegation from the European Union, Mr. Mahama emphasized his commitment to ensuring justice. He stated that those responsible for the deaths would face the full weight of the law.

“We are pleased with the overall success of the elections, but we cannot overlook the tragic loss of lives,” he said. “Our intention is to thoroughly investigate these incidents and hold anyone found culpable accountable.”

He added that while he hopes the outgoing administration will initiate the probe, his government would prioritize the matter upon assuming office if no action is taken.

The president-elect underscored the importance of maintaining accountability to uphold the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process.
