Supreme Court to rule on vacant seats case today

Barring any unforeseen changes, the Supreme Court is expected to deliver its ruling today, November 12, on the case concerning vacant parliamentary seats.

The court initially scheduled the ruling for Monday; however, when the case was called, Speaker Alban Bagbin’s legal team had not submitted necessary documentation, nor were any of his legal representatives present in court.

This absence followed a challenge from Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, who raised concerns about the legality of Thaddeus Sory’s continued representation of the Speaker. The Attorney-General argued that the engagement of Sory lacked the approval of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), calling it improper.

On October 17, 2024, Speaker Bagbin had declared four parliamentary seats vacant, contending that certain Members of Parliament had violated constitutional requirements by shifting their political allegiance ahead of the upcoming elections.
