Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mr. Sam Nartey George, has assured Ghanaians that a reduction in data prices is on the horizon, promising tangible changes by the end of 2025.

Speaking at an event to mark World Telecommunications and Information Society Day on Monday, May 19, Mr. George addressed growing public frustration over the high cost of internet services, particularly voiced by users on social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter).

Responding to calls for the removal of taxes said to be inflating data costs by over 39%, the Minister reaffirmed his earlier commitment to deliver relief within the year. “My promise was that by the end of this year, we will see prices drop—and my promise remains. Just trust the process,” he said.

Acknowledging the mounting criticism, Mr. George noted that while public demand for immediate action is understandable, the issue requires a strategic and methodical solution, not an impulsive one. “I’ve been trending over the weekend on X because people think data costs must be cheaper by just the stroke of my pen,” he remarked.

The Minister revealed that a committee he commissioned to tackle the issue had already concluded its assignment ahead of schedule. “I tasked the committee with creating a roadmap to reduce data prices within 14 days. They delivered in 13,” he announced.

He explained that the current pricing challenges are the result of market distortions built up over the past eight years, making it impossible to correct the situation overnight. “We’re dealing with eight years of market distortion. I wish I could fix it arbitrarily, but it takes a carefully calculated effort,” he stated.

With the roadmap now in the implementation phase, Mr. George urged Ghanaians to remain patient and hopeful, assuring them that the government is committed to making data more affordable for all.
