President John Mahama has announced major leadership changes at the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), appointing Kwesi Afreh Biney as the new Director-General of the institution.

Adam Sulley has also been appointed as the Deputy Director-General, overseeing Operations and Benefits.

These appointments follow the dismissal of Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo from his role as Director-General of SSNIT. Sources indicate that the contracts of Osafo-Maafo’s three deputies have also been terminated as part of the leadership overhaul.

The affected officials include Kwame Adu-Darkwa, Deputy Director-General for Finance and Administration; Juliana Kpedekpo, Deputy Director-General for Operations and Benefits; and Nana Serwah Bonsu Amoakom, Deputy Director-General for Investment and Development.

This shake-up in SSNIT’s leadership is the latest in a series of changes at the institution. In April 2024, former President Nana Akufo-Addo removed Dr. John Ofori Tenkorang as Director-General, replacing him with Osafo-Maafo.

Osafo-Maafo, the son of former Presidential Advisor Yaw Osafo-Maafo, took charge during a period of unrest at SSNIT, which had seen multiple resignations, including that of Michael Addo, the Deputy Director-General for Finance and Administration at the time.

His tenure also led to the reassignment of Pearl Nana Ama Darko, who was transferred from SSNIT to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) as Commissioner for Support Services. Now, with the new administration in place, Juliana Kpedekpo, who succeeded Darko at SSNIT, is among those whose contracts have been terminated.
