President John Dramani Mahama has officially declared his assets in compliance with Article 286 of Ghana’s Constitution, submitting his completed forms to the Auditor-General.

As part of his broader anti-corruption agenda, he has also mandated all public office holders and appointees to declare their assets by March 31, 2025. He warned that those who fail to meet the deadline will face severe sanctions, including possible removal from office.

Ghana’s Constitution requires public officials to declare their assets and liabilities before assuming office, at the end of every four-year term, and upon leaving office. The declaration process is aimed at fostering transparency and deterring corruption.

The Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, was present at the Presidency to receive President Mahama’s forms, underscoring the administration’s commitment to institutional integrity.

Speaking at the event, Mahama highlighted the importance of asset declaration in curbing corruption.

“I have just performed a simple but significant act of presenting my completed asset declaration forms to the Auditor-General, as required by Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution and the Public Office Holders (Declaration of Assets and Disqualification) Act, 1996 (Act 550),” he stated.

He explained that while past declarations were often done privately, he chose to make his submission public to promote openness. “If earnestly curated and enforced, the asset declaration process can become a sustainable tool for tackling corruption,” he added.

Mahama’s directive is aimed at ensuring accountability in public service and preventing corruption before it takes root, rather than reacting to it after the fact.
