More than 60 Members of Parliament from the minority side paid a visit to the Nima office of former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on Thursday to express their support for his future bid for the party's presidential candidacy.

In a widely circulated video on social media, Sammi Awuku, MP for Akuapem North, is seen speaking to journalists, saying, “We are here to see His Excellency, engage in discussions about the upcoming presidential primaries, and hear from him directly if he’s considering running again.”

Dr. Bawumia’s spokesperson, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, also weighed in on the development via Facebook, stating, “DMB remains our fastest path to election 2028 victory.”

Meanwhile, the NPP's National Executive Council (NEC), during a meeting held on June 17 at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, announced that the party’s presidential primaries will take place on Saturday, January 31, 2026. The NEC meeting, which was chaired by First Vice Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey due to the absence of National Chairman Stephen Ntim, focused on several issues, including proposed constitutional reforms presented by a committee led by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Aaron Oquaye.

High-profile party members in attendance included Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako.

Although nominations for the presidential primaries are yet to officially open, a number of party stalwarts have already declared their intentions to run. These include Dr. Bawumia, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, and Minister for Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

The NPP is still recovering from its defeat in both the presidential and parliamentary elections held in December 2024. In response, a fact-finding committee led by Prof. Oquaye was established to probe the causes of the party’s loss. While the official report has yet to be released, leaks suggest that factors contributing to the poor electoral performance included the record of former President Nana Akufo-Addo, the role of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, and Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy.
