The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a localized outbreak of COVID-19 at the University of Ghana, Legon. In an official public health advisory issued on Thursday, June 26, the GHS reported that all identified cases so far are mild, with no hospitalizations recorded.

Health authorities are actively working with university officials to manage and contain the outbreak, which remains confined to the university campus. The response plan includes reviewing current preventive measures and enhancing on-site monitoring to curb further transmission.

While emphasizing that the outbreak is limited, the GHS cautioned the public not to become complacent. “COVID-19 remains a global threat, with occasional outbreaks still anticipated due to seasonal patterns,” the advisory stated. Although the World Health Organisation (WHO) has downgraded COVID-19 from its classification as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, Ghana continues to maintain active surveillance.

Monitoring efforts are ongoing in all 16 regions through a collaboration between the GHS and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), as part of the national influenza and COVID-19 tracking programme. Notably, Ghana has experienced a sustained decline in COVID-19 cases over the past year.

GHS Recommends Continued Adherence to Preventive Measures

In light of the recent outbreak, the GHS is once again encouraging the public to observe basic safety protocols, including:

  • Maintaining physical distance in public spaces

  • Wearing masks in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas

  • Washing hands frequently with soap under running water or using hand sanitiser

  • Self-isolating when experiencing symptoms

  • Avoiding large gatherings

  • Promptly seeking medical care if symptoms occur

Common symptoms to watch for include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, fatigue, shortness of breath, and loss of taste or smell.

Public Reassurance

The Ministry of Health, through the GHS, has reassured the university community and the wider public that all necessary measures are being taken to control the spread of the virus. The Service also called for collective responsibility and cooperation, particularly in environments that may facilitate transmission.

GHS emphasized that maintaining vigilance is key to preventing a wider resurgence and sustaining the progress made in reducing infections nationwide.
