The Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, has cautioned that power outages, popularly known as dumsor, are likely to persist until the end of the year.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, he attributed the ongoing crisis to inefficiencies within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), warning that unless these operational challenges are resolved, the situation will not improve.

“We are fully aware of these challenges, and until ECG addresses its inefficiencies, I regret to say that dumsor will continue until the year ends,” he stated.

Nana Amoasi VII emphasized the need for ECG to boost revenue collection and ensure fair distribution of funds among stakeholders in the energy sector.

“The ECG must fix its inefficiencies, collect sufficient revenue, and ensure that all participants in the energy sector receive their fair share. Until that happens, this issue will persist,” he added.

He highlighted how revenue shortfalls are crippling key players in the power sector, making it difficult for GRIDCo to upgrade its aging transmission infrastructure. Similarly, ECG faces its own infrastructural struggles due to financial constraints.

“If power generators, whether public or private, lack the necessary resources to sustain production, it will be difficult for them to generate power. WAPCo may also struggle to supply natural gas consistently. This puts the entire energy sector in a precarious situation,” he warned.
