The Greater Accra Regional Chapter of the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GAR-GNECC) has joined the international community in observing the 2025 Global Action Week for Education (GAWE), a global initiative led by the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) to address pressing challenges in the education sector.

This year’s GAWE theme, “Education in Emergencies,” focuses on the urgent need to safeguard learning continuity and quality during times of crisis and instability.

In a statement to mark the occasion, GAR-GNECC called on the government and its development partners to ramp up support for transformative education in Ghana. The Coalition outlined key areas of intervention needed to build a more resilient and inclusive education system.

Among their recommendations were:

  • Significant investment in school infrastructure to provide safe and conducive learning environments.

  • Enhanced funding for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure across educational institutions.

  • An increase in the education sector’s budgetary allocation from the current 15% to at least 20% of the national budget, in line with international benchmarks.

As part of its activities to commemorate GAWE 2025, GAR-GNECC will host a radio panel discussion to explore challenges and opportunities in advancing transformative education within the Greater Accra Region.

The Coalition emphasized that investing in education is essential to preparing the country’s youth for an uncertain future, especially in the face of emergencies such as pandemics, conflicts, and climate-related disasters.

“Education must be prioritized and protected at all times, particularly during crises,” the group stated, stressing that proactive measures are necessary to ensure learning never stops, regardless of circumstances.

GAR-GNECC’s advocacy adds to growing calls across the country for increased government commitment to building a stronger and more equitable education system capable of meeting both current needs and future demands.
