The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has dismissed allegations that recent power fluctuations were responsible for the fire outbreak at the Adum market.

Addressing the issue, Ing. George Amoah, the Ashanti West Regional General Manager of ECG, explained that the market is powered by a dedicated distribution line, the Town Hall Feeder, which also has an alternative supply from Power House 2. According to him, both power sources were stable before the fire occurred.

Ing. Amoah reassured the public of ECG’s commitment to delivering a reliable power supply, acknowledging the market’s significance as a key commercial hub.

While admitting that past power disruptions in the area have often resulted from vandalism and theft of transformers and cables, he maintained that there was no power instability before the fire. ECG only disconnected electricity after the blaze started to facilitate firefighting efforts.

He also highlighted the risks posed by outdated wiring, illegal connections, and substandard electrical installations in the market, which could contribute to such incidents. To enhance safety, ECG has urged traders to engage certified electricians, as required by LI 2008 regulations.

Additionally, Ing. Amoah clarified that a recent power outage affecting parts of Kumasi had no impact on the Adum market and was entirely unrelated to the fire.
