Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has urged the termination of Otto Addo’s contract as head coach of the Black Stars, citing the team’s inability to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Black Stars ended their AFCON qualifying campaign in disappointing fashion, finishing last in Group F with only three points from six matches and no victories to their name.

Afriyie pointed out that qualifying for AFCON was a key condition in Addo’s contract, and failing to meet this objective provides grounds for his dismissal.

“AFCON qualification is a fundamental clause in coaching contracts. Failing to achieve this gives the GFA every justification to terminate the agreement,” Afriyie explained during an interview with Graphic Sports.

While advocating for Addo’s departure, Afriyie also called for a comprehensive assessment of the coach’s overall performance, particularly his management of the World Cup qualifiers.

“It’s important to evaluate his entire tenure, including his approach to the World Cup qualifiers, before making a final decision,” Afriyie added.

Ghana’s elimination was confirmed on Monday after a 2-1 defeat to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium, a loss that left fans and stakeholders deeply frustrated.

The GFA’s Executive Council is set to meet on Wednesday to review the team’s underwhelming performance and decide on the future of the coaching staff.
