The Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing has called on the government to act swiftly to ensure the completion of the long-delayed Affordable Housing Project at Pokuase-Mayera in Accra.

During a site visit on Monday, May 5, 2025, Committee Chairman Vincent Oppong Asamoah voiced serious concerns about the project's stagnant progress and warned of increasing threats from encroachers and land guards.

“This is a strategic location. If we don’t act now, encroachment will worsen, putting infrastructure and lives at risk,” he said.

Project Delays Blamed on Funding Gaps

Originally slated for completion in 2024, the housing development remains incomplete due to delayed disbursement of funds. Mr. Oppong Asamoah pointed to the Ministry of Finance as a key player in resolving the funding bottlenecks, emphasizing the need for immediate action.

“The contractor tells us no mobilization funds were released. This is a major issue that must be urgently addressed,” he stated.

He also highlighted the broader implications of the delay, comparing the Pokuase-Mayera project to the stalled Saglemi housing initiative. “These are critical interventions, and the lack of financial support is jeopardizing their success,” he said.

Encroachment and Security Concerns

Apart from funding issues, the site is facing serious security risks. Encroachers and land guards have become a growing nuisance, with some attempting to obstruct the committee’s visit. Mr. Oppong Asamoah noted that the delay is giving room for illegal occupation, further complicating the situation.

“The government must take firm action. The longer this project is left incomplete, the more difficult it will be to reclaim the land and protect workers,” he added.

Call for Coordinated Government Action

The Committee has pledged to follow up with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Works and Housing to push for resource allocation. Mr. Oppong Asamoah stressed that the site holds enormous potential as a residential hub and deserves urgent attention.

“We believe this can be a beautiful residential area. The environment is calm and family-friendly. Personally, I would be proud to live here,” he said.

Despite the setbacks, the committee remains hopeful that, with the right support, the project can be completed to offer decent housing to many Ghanaians. The members concluded their visit with a strong appeal to government authorities to prioritize and protect the investment already made in the Pokuase-Mayera project.
