President John Mahama is scheduled to meet the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, this weekend as part of his ongoing efforts to mediate and bring lasting peace to the conflict-ridden Bawku area in the Upper East Region.

On Tuesday, January 14, President Mahama embarked on a crucial peace mission to Bawku and Nalerigu, emphasizing his government’s commitment to addressing the long-standing tensions that have plagued the region.

During a visit to Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, the overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, President Mahama appealed for patience and collaboration from the traditional authorities and their subjects.

“I came to plead with him and his people to exercise restraint and have faith that we will resolve this matter peacefully. I appeal to my father to remain patient as I set up my government to tackle this issue,” President Mahama stated.

He also referenced his briefing with former President Nana Akufo-Addo at the end of the latter’s tenure, acknowledging earlier mediation efforts aimed at resolving the Bawku conflict.

“In my final discussion with Nana Akufo-Addo before he left office, he updated me on some of the mediation initiatives they had undertaken. I hope to build on those efforts. I also recall how he, along with the late Yagbonwura and Otumfuo, successfully mediated the Dagbon conflict,” he noted.

President Mahama highlighted the importance of meeting the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on January 19, given Otumfuo’s instrumental role in resolving the Dagbon crisis.

“Nana Akufo-Addo mentioned that Otumfuo has been involved in some mediation efforts. I will meet Otumfuo on the 19th of this month, and the Bawku issue will be among the topics we discuss. Once we make progress, I will share the outcomes with my father [Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II],” the President assured.
