GIBA applauds Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko on his appointment as NCA Director-General

The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) has congratulated Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko on his appointment as the Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA).

In a statement issued on January 22, 2025, GIBA hailed the announcement by the Presidency as a significant milestone for Ghana’s telecommunications and broadcasting sectors. The association expressed confidence in Rev. Ing. Fianko’s ability to lead the NCA, citing his extensive experience and deep understanding of the industry.

A Seasoned Leader in Communications

GIBA highlighted Rev. Ing. Fianko’s remarkable career journey, which began at the NCA as a National Service Person. Rising through the ranks, he eventually became the Director of Engineering, a role in which he demonstrated expertise in radio frequency spectrum management, telecommunications regulation, and policy development.

“With over two decades of experience in the electronic communications regulatory field, Rev. Ing. Fianko is no stranger to the challenges and opportunities within the industry,” GIBA stated.

The association commended his dedication to advancing broadcasting and telecommunications in Ghana, noting his leadership in initiatives like chairing the African Telecommunications Union Task Group on Rural Connectivity Spectrum Recommendations.

Vision for the Future

GIBA expressed optimism that Rev. Ing. Fianko’s tenure would bring significant advancements to Ghana’s broadcasting landscape.

“As Director-General, he is well-positioned to guide the regulatory framework needed to foster a dynamic and innovative broadcasting sector. His expertise and leadership will undoubtedly address the evolving challenges in telecommunications while promoting innovation and quality in service delivery,” the statement said.

A Track Record of Excellence

The association also acknowledged Rev. Ing. Fianko’s contributions during challenging periods for the broadcasting industry, where he demonstrated unwavering commitment to upholding the constitutional protections for the media.

“His professional integrity and dedication to safeguarding the independence of Ghana’s broadcasting sector have earned him recognition as a credible and principled public servant,” GIBA added.

Academic and Community Leadership

GIBA highlighted Rev. Ing. Fianko’s impressive academic credentials, which include a degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and a Master of Philosophy in Applied Business Leadership and Management. His dual roles as a Minister of the Methodist Church and a community leader were also noted as testaments to his passion for service.

Call for Collaboration

As the broadcasting sector anticipates the positive impact of his leadership, GIBA called on all stakeholders to unite in supporting the NCA’s initiatives under Rev. Ing. Fianko’s stewardship.

“GIBA remains committed to promoting the interests of independent broadcasters and fostering dialogue with regulatory bodies. We look forward to collaborating with Rev. Ing. Fianko to enhance broadcasting standards and performance across Ghana,” the association said.
